Why are Honeycrisp Apples so pricey?
1.). The University of Minnesota still holds the patent for Honeycrisps.Every tree that is purchased by growers, they have to pay a $ 1.00 royalty to the university.
2.) Honeycrisps ripen at different times requiring 3 pickings per crop.
3.) The trees are weak and require a trellis system to support the limbs because the fruit is so heavy.
4.) The skin is so thin that pickers must be extra careful not to puncture or bruise the fruit.
5.) Because of all the extra care required; pickers are paid by the hour and not by the bin.
all that being said; you decide whether or not paying up to 4 times the cost of other apples is worth parting with your denaro.
