No Compromise to Quality

We refuse to compromise on quality in our restaurant. That's why we source our fresh ingredients from local farmers' markets. No matter what time of year, you can be sure you're eating the best of the season.

I have become the new face you see each time you visit O’Carr’s. Although I am not as attractive of a face as June, she did teach me a lot about the value of our customers. I joined the O’Carrs family over a year ago when the pandemic had caused the restaurant to reduce seating due to lack of help. June bribed me by telling me she would pay me in chicken salad. :) Well I took the bait and look at me now. God had his hands all over this relationship from the beginning and I cannot tell you how much it means to me!
I absolutely love coming to work each day and seeing all the friendly faces that come in on a regular basis, and all the new faces everyday.
A little back history about me: I come from a small town in the mountains of North Carolina. I am just an average guy who comes from a modest family. I have a small obsession with my dogs, so if you start talking about German shepherds then be prepared! I have always had a strong work ethic that could be construed as a blessing or a curse. I like to see the positives in every experience and take the lessons to grow in my personal and professional life. I think it’s a blessing!

A Torch is Passed A Legacy Continues

After opening an ice cream parlor/deli on 18th Street in 1975, Cameron and his wife June started catering for Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffet, Dolly Parton, Styx, Little River Band and other various performers on tour in Birmingham. The couple, who had started off working for Kentucky Fried Chicken, often worked from 5 a.m. until 1 a.m. to feed the crew and performers.

Ocarr's Famous Chicken Salad

O’Carr’s famous chicken salad also started at a concert. When catering for the City Stages Music Festival VIP, the Carrs thought they’d try chicken salad and fruit to feed around 3,500 people. They had no idea at the time that dish would later make up 45 percent of sales at their restaurant. Today they sell 2,000 pounds of chicken salad each week.

Dream and Work Hard

O’Carr’s, the restaurant Cameron and his wife, June, run together, has been a Homewood institution for 43 years. It opened as an ice cream parlor in November 1975.
“We realized quickly that wouldn’t work,” Cameron says. “It was winter!” The duo, who lived in an apartment off Green Springs, quickly added a soup and sandwich to the menu, and sold them for 99 cents each. “That’s great,” he says. “But even a great day with 100 people only brought you $99.”
